Nanny & Housekeeper Recruitment Agency

Maternity Nurses

General Information

A Maternity Nurse provides complete care for mother and baby. They provide a smooth introduction to helping you and your new baby settle into family life. This includes advising you on and helping you with feeding your baby, bathing, changing and settling baby down. They are responsible for baby’s laundry and taking care of the nursery. A maternity nurse has a wealth of experience to offer and can be a great source of help and advice, not only about the development and well being of baby, but will also encourage your evolvement, developing your confidence in handling your new baby and help promote positive relationships between siblings.

Working Hours and Pay

Maternity nurses are self employed and liable for their own Tax and National Insurance Contributions. Their salaries vary according to experience and number of babies they are caring for:-

24 hour Maternity Nurses:
Single baby    from £200 per day
Twins             from £220 per day
Triplets             from £250 per day

Daily Maternity Nurses:
From £20 per hour, minimum of 4 hours (if less £30 per hour)

Night nannines (9pm - 7am):
Single baby    from £120 per night
Twins             from £150 per night
Triplets             from £170 per night

A Maternity Nurse is on duty 24 hours a day usually six days a week. This is where the cost of a maternity nurse begins to make sense. They must however have at least one full day off a week.

Qualifications

Although there hasn’t been a specific Maternity Nurse qualification until recently, listed below are some of the qualifications that we look for and are appropriate for the profession of a Maternity Nurse.

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Registered Sick Children’s Nurse (RSCN)
  • Registered Midwife (RM)
  • Registered Health Visitor (RHV)
  • Cache diploma in Nursery Nursing
  • BTEC and NVQ in Childcare
  • Maternity Practitioner Award (MNT)

Not all Maternity Nurses have a formal qualification; most nurses tend to be very experienced nannies with extensive experience with newborn babies.

Our Verification procedure

  • We require a minimum of two proofs of identity.
  • We verify relevant qualifications (where possible).
  • We speak to a minimum of two previous employers
  • We require a valid First Aid Certificate as well as CRB.

As well as formal checks, we personally interview all applicants and use our knowledge, skills and experience to gauge their suitability for the position.

Procedure for getting a Maternity Nurse

If you are interested in using our services, you can either contact one of our consultants or register online. In either case, we will need to have a conversation with you to get a full understanding about your individual needs.

Please bear in mind that many nurses will have limited time to interview as they mostly work 6 days a week, 24 hours a day, leaving only one day open for interviews.

If you are happy with the candidate, we recommend you speak to their previous employer and if things are satisfactory, you may offer them the position.

It is essential that you find a Nurse who suits your particular needs; we therefore strongly recommend that you book your maternity nurse many months in advance. This ensures that you have a selection of high calibre nurses to choose from as most nurses book up fast.
